AI fosters speed. Transparency fosters confidence.

AI for QA testing is suddenly everywhere. Every tool claims it’s “AI-powered.” Every demo promises smarter test generation, faster maintenance, and fewer bugs. Plus, with AI accelerating the pace at which developers write and ship code, QA leaders are under growing pressure to keep up.

It makes sense that teams are looking for AI for QA testing. But here’s the uncomfortable truth: AI in QA only works if you can trust it. 

Trust requires transparency. And, unfortunately, not all AI for QA testing tools are fully transparent. AI that operates behind the scenes, makes unvalidated decisions, and passes tests without explaining what happened can cause a lot of problems. Our job in QA is literally to surface risk, and invisible AI behavior is the fastest path to missed regressions and bad releases (i.e., risk).

Why transparency is non-negotiable in AI for QA testing

AI can help generate code, summarize data, and automate many workflows with minimal human oversight, but QA has specific requirements.

QA sits at the intersection of:

  • Risk
  • User experience
  • Product stability
  • Business continuity

You’re not just validating that things work. You’re validating that they work the right way.

A checkout test could “work” by reaching a configuration page, even if the AI took a shortcut path that bypassed search, pricing rules, or promo validation. But if the test doesn’t follow the intended customer journey, that green check isn’t worth much.

Your AI system might make decisions in your tests, such as choosing paths, rewriting steps, and “healing” failures. But if you can’t see exactly what it changed or why, then you’re no longer just testing your product. You’re relying on AI’s non-deterministic assumptions about the best ways to test your product. And that’s a problem. 

Transparency isn’t a “nice to have” in this context. It’s the difference between knowing your release is solid and just hoping the AI didn’t overlook something important.

What opaque AI for QA testing looks like (and why it’s dangerous)

Most teams don’t realize they’re using opaque AI for QA testing until something goes wrong. Here are the patterns we see most often:

1. Tests pass…but you have no idea what was actually tested.

Some tools don’t show the AI tool’s steps or reasoning. A test may have “passed,” but a green checkmark doesn’t tell you:

  • Which path(s) it took
  • Whether it skipped important steps
  • Whether it validated the actual user behavior you care about

2. “Self-healing” changes tests behind the scenes.

Self-healing can be valuable if it’s visible. But when tools rewrite selectors, steps, or assertions silently, regressions get buried instead of surfaced.

A passing test means nothing if you don’t know why it passed.

3. AI generates lots of tests, but not necessarily the ones that matter.

Some systems churn out dozens or hundreds of low-value tests (like checking the Terms of Service page) that inflate your test suite without improving coverage. Here’s the reality:

  • Volume does not equal value.
  • Quantity does not equal quality.

Opaque AI hides these distinctions.

4. The AI chooses different paths every time it runs.

If you’re always reliant on AI at runtime, even if a test or step is well-prompted, you’re not guaranteed consistent coverage (i.e., confidence). That’s just how LLMs work. LLMs are non-deterministic at runtime, and that uncertainty undermines the very purpose of regression testing.

Opaque AI isn’t just inconvenient. It’s actively dangerous in AI for QA testing, because it can hide failing tests, inconsistent behavior, and broken selectors. 

Transparency isn’t about perfection; it’s about visibility 

QA teams don’t need AI to be magic. AI tools don’t have to do everything perfectly every time without human intervention. They just need to perform pretty well—and be understandable and transparent so humans can spot issues and oversights.

Transparency gives teams:

  • Clarity about what the AI is doing
  • Curation of which tests matter and which don’t
  • Control over how those tests evolve
  • Confidence that regressions will surface
  • Context for debugging when things go wrong

Opaque AI takes all of that away. When AI removes visibility, it makes it harder to execute the core responsibility of QA: evaluating risk. 

If you can’t see the AI’s reasoning, decisions, or changes, you’re no longer in control of your test suite; the AI is. That’s why transparency isn’t a nice-to-have feature for QA. It’s a prerequisite.

How transparent AI strengthens QA 

When AI is transparent, it empowers your testers (whether full-time QA professionals or other roles) rather than replacing them.

Transparent AI:

  • Documents every step it takes during test creation or maintenance
  • Explains why it chose certain actions
  • Keeps execution deterministic, so test runs are consistent
  • Elevates humans to higher-value work: strategy, prioritization, risk assessment

Transparent AI for QA testing speeds up the grunt work but keeps humans in control of outcomes. Transparency is about scaling QA without sacrificing visibility or quality, not hand-holding. That’s what teams actually want from AI for QA. 

How do you know if an AI tool is truly transparent? 

This is where teams often struggle, for good reason. Most AI for QA testing tools claim (if not explicitly, then implicitly) to be explainable, trustworthy, and transparent.

Sales demos often look polished regardless of what the product does behind the scenes. Marketing language can sound convincing even when the underlying behavior is opaque.
