Plus, with AI accelerating the pace at which developers write and ship code, QA leaders are under growing pressure to keep up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It makes sense that teams are looking for AI for QA testing. But here&#8217;s the uncomfortable truth: AI in QA only works if you can trust it.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trust requires transparency. And, unfortunately, not all AI for QA testing tools are fully transparent. AI that operates behind the scenes, makes unvalidated decisions, and passes tests without explaining what happened can cause a lot of problems. You\u2019re validating that they work the right way.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A checkout test could &#8220;work&#8221; by reaching a configuration page, even if the AI took a shortcut path that bypassed search, pricing rules, or promo validation. But if the test doesn&#8217;t follow the intended customer journey, that green check isn&#8217;t worth much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your AI system might make decisions in your tests, such as choosing paths, rewriting steps, and \u201chealing\u201d failures. But if you can\u2019t see exactly what it changed or why, then you\u2019re no longer just testing your product. You\u2019re relying on AI\u2019s non-deterministic assumptions about the best ways to test your product. And that\u2019s a problem.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Transparency isn\u2019t a \u201cnice to have\u201d in this context. It\u2019s the difference between knowing your release is solid and just hoping the AI didn\u2019t overlook something important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_opaque_AI_for_QA_testing_looks_like_and_why_its_dangerous\"><\/span>What opaque AI for QA testing looks like (and why it\u2019s dangerous)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most teams don\u2019t realize they\u2019re using opaque AI for QA testing until something goes wrong. Here are the patterns we see most often:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Tests pass\u2026but you have no idea what was actually tested.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some tools don\u2019t show the AI tool\u2019s steps or reasoning. A test may have \u201cpassed,\u201d but a green checkmark doesn\u2019t tell you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Which path(s) it took<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whether it skipped important steps<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whether it validated the actual user behavior you care about<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. \u201cSelf-healing\u201d changes tests behind the scenes.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Self-healing can be valuable if it\u2019s visible. But when tools rewrite selectors, steps, or assertions silently, regressions get buried instead of surfaced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A passing test means nothing if you don\u2019t know why it passed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. AI generates lots of tests, but not necessarily the ones that matter.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some systems churn out dozens or hundreds of low-value tests (like checking the Terms of Service page) that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rainforestqa.com\/blog\/why-software-companies-should-only-test-what-matters\">inflate your test suite<\/a> without improving coverage. Here\u2019s the reality:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Volume does not equal value.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Quantity does not equal quality.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Opaque AI hides these distinctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. The AI chooses different paths every time it runs.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re always reliant on AI at runtime, even if a test or step is well-prompted, you&#8217;re not guaranteed consistent coverage (i.e., confidence). That&#8217;s just how LLMs work. LLMs are non-deterministic at runtime, and that uncertainty undermines the very purpose of regression testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Opaque AI isn\u2019t just inconvenient. It\u2019s actively dangerous in AI for QA testing, because it can hide failing tests, inconsistent behavior, and broken selectors.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Transparency_isnt_about_perfection_its_about_visibility\"><\/span>Transparency isn\u2019t about perfection; it\u2019s about visibility&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>QA teams don\u2019t need AI to be magic. AI tools don&#8217;t have to do everything perfectly every time without human intervention. They just need to perform pretty well\u2014and be understandable and transparent so humans can spot issues and oversights.<br><br>Transparency gives teams:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Clarity about <strong>what the AI is doing<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Curation of <strong>which tests matter<\/strong> and which don&#8217;t<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Control over <strong>how those tests evolve<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Confidence that <strong>regressions will surface<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Context for debugging<\/strong> when things go wrong<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Opaque AI takes all of that away. When AI removes visibility, it makes it harder to execute the core responsibility of QA: evaluating risk.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you can\u2019t see the AI\u2019s reasoning, decisions, or changes, you\u2019re no longer in control of your test suite; the AI is. That\u2019s why transparency isn\u2019t a nice-to-have feature for QA. It\u2019s a prerequisite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_transparent_AI_strengthens_QA\"><\/span>How transparent AI strengthens QA&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When AI is transparent, it empowers your testers (whether full-time QA professionals or other roles) rather than replacing them.<br><br>Transparent AI:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Documents every step it takes during test creation or maintenance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Explains why it chose certain actions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keeps execution deterministic, so test runs are consistent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Elevates humans to higher-value work: strategy, prioritization, risk assessment<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Transparent AI for QA testing speeds up the grunt work but keeps humans in control of outcomes. Transparency is about scaling QA without sacrificing visibility or quality, not hand-holding.
