The Changing Landscape of the Role of QA Testers

Having spent 20+ years in the QA industry, with more than 15 years building QA teams, Melissa has seen first-hand how the QA industry is evolving. “On Friday, I’ll be sharing my observations from the last 20 years and discussing what it means to be a modern QA professional vs. a traditional QA professional. Unfortunately, QA professionals have not always been seen to be as valuable as our developer counterparts. But that is simply not true. We need to continue to work to shift this perception,” says Melissa.

What Does It Mean to Be a “Modern QA Professional?”

“The modern QA professional is a QE (Quality Engineer). QEs do not just ensure that software is up to quality standards after it’s been developed. Rather, QEs are influential in the building of the software before it’s even started to be developed,” says Melissa.

Most QA professionals are already familiar with the concept of “shifting left”– starting the QA process earlier in the software development lifecycle. But Melissa emphasizes it’s important for QEs to be aware of what’s to the right of them, too. Modern QEs are key to the development process before development begins, all the way to when the software is being used by customers.

Balancing Technical Acumen and User Advocacy

Being aware of everything that’s happening to the left AND right, is the key to being able to create more efficient testing processes. “Moving between being a part of the development process, ensuring that software is developed with quality in mind, to advocating for end users by focusing on strategic testing initiatives, is the modern tester’s role,” says Melissa. The modern testers’ guiding principle is that they can provide value across the entire product lifecycle by balancing technical acumen and user advocacy.
